Try this DIY dry shampoo recipe and keep your hair from looking oily in between washes. Easy to make and all non-toxic ingredients!

As a homeschool mom of four kids, time is precious. Getting a full shower and washing my hair is not my top priority every day. I have done a lot of work over the last few years to get my hair healthy, strong, and growing quickly. Hormones in my teens made my hair super oily, and postpartum brought it right back again but even worse. Finding a way to soak up those oils so that I did not have to wash my hair every day became a top priority.

I learned from a friend about essential oils and how a few of them were very beneficial for hair health and growth. I began the process of ditching all of the toxic products out of our home. Because of this, I decided to start making my own DIY dry shampoo recipe using these oils.

There are several important benefits to making your own DIY dry shampoo, and really to making many of your products in general. First, it allows you to ensure that the ingredients are all safe and non-toxic. Second, you can adjust the recipe to fit your specific hair needs or preferred fragrance. And finally, the fragrance in the dry shampoo is all natural. This means no nasty headaches or other effects to your body that you can’t see right away from the toxic ingredients.

Personally, any time I go near the cleaning or beauty aisles in a store, I get a massive headache. Those artificial fragrances and other toxic ingredients can overload your body systems very quickly. You may not see the effects right away, but eventually there will be health issues that appear.

How to Make This DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe

I am going to share two simple DIY dry shampoo recipes with you. One for light hair and one for dark hair. They are both essentially the same recipe with minor tweaks.

The first thing you want to do is add your dry ingredients to a glass bowl.

Once the dry ingredients are added, it’s time to add the essential oils. Put three drops of each in your glass bowl and stir to mix.

DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe Ingredients:

For light hair:

  • 1/4 cup organic arrowroot powder
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 3 drops Cedarwood essential oil
  • 3 drops Peppermint essential oil

For dark hair:

  • 2 tbsp organic arrowroot powder
  • 2 tbsp organic raw cacao powder
  • 1/2-1 tbsp baking soda
  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 3 drops Cedarwood essential oil
  • 3 drops Peppermint essential oil

DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe Instructions:

  1. Add all of the dry ingredients to a glass bowl.
  2. Once the dry ingredients are added, add 3 drops each of Lavender, Rosemary, Cedarwood and Peppermint essential oil.
  3. Stir well to mix.
  4. Move to a glass jar or powder spray bottle for storage.

Lavender Benefits for Hair

Lavender has been shown to produce more hair follicles to help thicken and strengthen hair. It is a wonderful floral aroma that is very calming and relaxing.

Some of my other favorite uses for Lavender are for sleep support, and all things healthy skin! Think cuts, scrapes, burns, bites, etc.

Rosemary Benefits for Hair

Rosemary is a top oil for hair growth and thickness. It is great for either dry or oily hair and can also help to prevent split ends.

Cedarwood Benefits for Hair

Cedarwood helps to strengthen the hair follicles, which means faster and stronger regrowth of hair.

Besides being amazing for hair growth, Cedarwood is a fantastic oil to keep around to help you get into a good, deep sleep, and also to repel ticks.

Peppermint Benefits for Hair

Peppermint is a great addition because it helps reduce the oiliness of hair. It also stimulates the hair follicles and encourages them to grow faster and stronger.

Peppermint has so many other uses! Headaches, energy, nausea…these are just some of the ways I have used it.

How to Store:

There are two storage options for your DIY dry shampoo. The first option is to seal it in a glass jar in between uses. The second option is to use a powder spray bottle to store it. The storage option you choose depends on the application method you prefer.

If you prefer to use a makeup brush to apply on your roots, then you will want to store it in a glass jar. If you would rather spray it directly on your roots, a powder spray bottle is the best option.

How to Use Your DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe

The best time to use your DIY dry shampoo recipe is at night. This allows it to soak up all of the extra oils in your hair overnight, so you are ready to brush it and style it the next day. If you forget to put it in before bed, no worries! Just apply in the morning and let it sit for as long as you can before brushing it out.

To apply from the glass jar, it’s really helpful to have a large makeup brush. You just dip the makeup brush in the dry shampoo. Then, gently tap the brush on the side of the jar to shake off the excess and brush it on your roots. You can also dip your fingers in it and rub it on your roots, but keep in mind that your fingers naturally have oils on them too that you would be adding to your hair…

To apply from the power spray bottle, just lift your hair up to get to the roots more easily and spray on everywhere that it’s needed. Let it sit for as long as you can to soak up the oils before brushing out and styling.
