When our family started making swaps to cleaner, less toxic products, finding a hair detangler was a top priority. I think we all know that playing in water all the time can lead to some serious tangles. But, something I never knew before having kids is that their hair would get major tangles just from sleeping or sitting in the car seat! All of my kids have fine hair as infants and toddlers, so when they roll around in the bed or turn their head side to side in the car their hair gets knots in it very easily.

I looked for a solution to this common problem and found that by using just a few ingredients, I could make my own hair detangler for kids. A hair detangler without all of the nasty ingredients and at a fraction of the cost!

Why Make Your Own Hair Detangler

I’m all for simplifying and making things myself. I would much rather throw a quick DIY together instead of running around to a bunch of stores to find exactly what I need. Plus, by keeping just a few key ingredients in stock at our house, I am able to make a wide variety of products that we use daily.

The first reason to make your own hair detangler is because then you know exactly what ingredients are in it. Just flip a bottle of hair detangler around when you are shopping one day and check out the list of ingredients manufacturers include…

On top of all of the other nasty ingredients that you can’t pronounce the names of, you will also see “fragrance” on just about any product you buy. The term “fragrance” can encompass a huge variety of ingredients that the manufacturers use to add scent to their product, without having to disclose the actual chemicals that they used.

Having kids really changed our perspective on the products we allow in our home, and we have seen big results from ditching all of the crap. By ditching all of the toxic chemicals that over-burden our bodies and immune systems, our family gets sick less often and recovers more quickly when we do get sick. It’s better for our health now, and in the future!

Another reason to make your own hair detangler is because it is super cost effective. You can make a large bottle up at a fraction of the cost. Just double or triple the recipe depending on the size of your spray bottle.

Key Ingredients to Avoid in Store-Bought Hair Detangler

  1. Fragrance – Artificial fragrances can cause allergic reactions, eczema and other skin reactions. They can also disrupt your hormones and flood your body with carcinogens. Companies are not required to disclose the individual ingredients that make up their fragrances because they are considered proprietary.
  2. Cetrimonium Chloride – According to the EWG, Cetrimonium Chloride is known to cause allergies in the form of skin reactions and immunotoxicity. Immunotoxicity is when your immune system cannot function correctly because of exposure to toxic chemicals.
  3. Polysorbate 20 – Polysorbate 20 is treated with ethylene oxide when it is used in personal care products. This can cause the products to become contaminated with dangerous byproducts that are shown to cause cancer in animals. The amounts found in most store-bought personal care products are much higher than the amounts found to cause cancer in animals.

How to Make Hair Detangler for Kids

Make your own super simple hair detangler that actually works by just grabbing a few ingredients.

Hair Detangler for Kids Ingredients:

  • 8 oz. spray bottle
  • 4 tablespoons of jojoba oil (argan oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, and fractionated coconut oil are other alternatives)
  • 15 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil (optional)
  • Alcohol-free witch hazel

Lavender Benefits for Hair

Lavender has been shown to produce more hair follicles to help thicken and strengthen hair. It is a wonderful floral aroma that is very calming and relaxing.

Rosemary Benefits for Hair

Rosemary is a top oil for hair growth and thickness. It is great for either dry or oily hair and can also help to prevent split ends.

Tea Tree Benefits for Hair

Tea Tree is beneficial for a healthy, clean scalp. Add Tea Tree to your detangler if you have a dry, itchy scalp and/or want to protect against lice.

Hair Detangler for Kids Instructions:

The first thing you want to do is grab your jojoba oil and add 4 tablespoons into your spray bottle. Then, add the drops of essential oils.

Next, fill the rest of the bottle to the top with your alcohol-free witch hazel.

Finally, screw the top on and shake to combine. I would highly suggest shaking before use every time as the jojoba oil and witch hazel will separate.

How to Use Hair Detangler

For curly or matted hair, apply the detangler onto wet hair. Using a wide-tooth comb, start near the tips of the hair and work your way up slowly and gently. Follow up with a natural shampoo and conditioner.

For regular hair, you can apply on clean, dry or damp hair. Same as above, start near the tips and work your way up. You do not need to wash your hair out after combing it through.

Tip: It’s a good idea to make up an extra bottle of this awesome hair detangler to throw in your pool bag!
