This DIY laundry scent booster adds the scent back into your laundry without any of the toxic chemicals. Keep reading to see more benefits!

When my husband and I decided to begin swapping all of the products in our home out to non-toxic ones, laundry soap was one of the first ones to go. Clothing touches your skin all day, every day. When it is washed in toxic chemicals, those toxic chemicals are then touching your skin all day and being absorbed. Your body gets overloaded with these chemicals and then doesn’t work properly. This can lead to a dampened immune system, or over time, more serious health issues.

After we made the switch to non-toxic laundry soap, I wanted a way to infuse scent back into our clean clothes. I missed that fresh, clean smell. This DIY laundry scent booster is what I found that works amazing to infuse your clothes with that fresh, clean smell without adding toxic chemicals. Plus, the ingredients have other benefits for your laundry too!

How to Make DIY Laundry Scent Booster

This DIY is so simple. And simple is what I’m all about! You only need three ingredients to make it, and very little time.

The first step is to combine your Epsom salt and baking soda in a medium glass bowl. Then, choose what essential oils you want to use to add the scent. Think about the scents you typically gravitate towards, or what your favorite soap or lotion smells like. I will also give you some of my favorite scent ideas as a starting point. Once you add the essential oils, stir it all really well to mix.

Now, your laundry scent booster needs to dry. I typically leave mine out on the counter uncovered to dry. If it is moved into a covered container too quickly, it won’t dry out all the way and will clump together. An added bonus of leaving it out on the counter to dry is that your kitchen will smell amazing!

Once it is dry, I transfer it into my scent booster container, put the top on and it is ready to add to my laundry. Sprinkle two scoops, or about 2 tbsp, on top of the dirty clothes in the washer, and then start it like normal.

DIY Laundry Scent Booster Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of Epsom salt, unscented
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 40 drops of essential oils, assorted

Benefits to Making this DIY:

The first, and most important, benefit to using this DIY laundry scent booster is that it is completely non-toxic. It only contains three simple ingredients, and the fragrance is all natural. When you purchase scent boosters from the store, you can’t read at least half of the ingredients on the back, and they are loaded with artificial ingredients to create the fragrance. Many of these artificial ingredients wreak havoc on our body.

Epsom salt acts as the vehicle to get the scent into the clothes. It dissolves in the water and infuses the clothes with the scent. It also adds a little bit of softening power to the clothes.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer. That is why you see people put an open container of it in the back of the fridge…to keep the fridge from smelling bad (neutralize odors). Baking soda also helps to keep your clothes looking bright.

Another benefit to making this laundry scent booster is that it doesn’t cost much. Buy the Epsom salt and baking soda in bulk, and a little bit of essential oils goes a long way. Plus, one batch will last you for a while. Because my powder container is so large, I usually double this recipe to make it last even longer.

DIY Laundry Scent Booster Instructions:

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in a medium glass bowl.
  2. Add the essential oils and stir really well to mix.
  3. Let sit uncovered for about 12 hours so it does not clump together.
  4. Sprinkle 2 scoops (about 2 tbsp.) over the dirty clothes in the washer before starting the load.

Custom Scent Ideas:

  • Lavender + Rosemary or Eucalyptus
  • Joy (floral blend) + Orange
  • Gentle Baby (replace the toxic Dreft!)
  • Lemon + Basil
  • Grapefruit + Orange + Lime (mix and match any citrus and it smells amazing)
  • Lavender + Lemon

I love that this DIY allows for change. I get tired of the same scents all the time. When you make this laundry scent booster, you can change up the scent every time you make more, or not. It’s up to you! Plus, there are so many essential oil options. You can start by buying just a few and add to your collection over time. The possibilities are endless!
