Ditch the toxic chemicals and make this nontoxic DIY laundry stain remover. A simple, all-natural way to take care of stubborn stains.
With four young kids who are constantly eating and running around outside, I deal with my fair share of stains. While the best thing you can do for stains is to wash them right away, sometimes that just isn’t feasible.
This DIY laundry stain remover is an easy way to treat stains as soon as you can. Plus, it’s nontoxic too!
Why You Should Go Nontoxic
Why does it matter whether the products in your laundry room are nontoxic or not? The reason it matters so much is because you wear clothes all day. Any product or chemical that gets on your clothes will then be rubbing on your skin all day. Your skin is your biggest organ, and it absorbs everything. The more toxins and chemicals your body has to deal with, the weaker your immune system. Along with a host of skin issues and other problems that can occur.
Making the switch is so important! It can be a little intimidating at first to make the necessary changes, but a great tip for you is to just go one product, one room at a time through your house. You don’t have to throw everything in your house away and spend tons of money up front. Just do it little by little, and over time all of the changes make a big difference. You can make it even easier by keeping nontoxic essentials in stock at all times to make whipping up DIYs easy.
How to Make DIY Laundry Stain Remover
The first thing you need to make this DIY laundry stain remover is a roller bottle. If you don’t know, this is a small glass bottle that has a top with a built in metal or plastic ball. When you fill the bottle and place the roller cap on, you can then turn it upside down and roll the ball around on the desired location, and it rolls the mixture on the desired spot without dumping too much out. Really helpful when applying essential oils and stain remover.
Because I use this stain remover often, I purchased the largest roller bottle I could find (30 ml). However, you can use whatever size you want, just keep in mind you will have to refill it more often. While you’re at it, make an extra one to throw in your purse or diaper bag for on the go stain help.
Once you have your glass roller bottle, fill it halfway with the Thieves laundry soap. I typically just eyeball it, but you can measure out exactly 15 ml if you want to be more precise. (Note: I also really love using this laundry soap for washing our clothes!) Next, take your Thieves household cleaner and fill the roller bottle up almost to the top. You want to leave enough space for a little bit of Lemon essential oil and to allow room to shake the mixture up.
The final ingredient is Lemon essential oil. Add 10 drops into the roller bottle, pop the roller cap on and give it a shake to mix. Now you are ready to roll directly on stains before washing.
More Reasons to Love Lemon
Lemon is one of the essential oils I don’t ever want to run out of! I kid you not, it is used almost every day in our house. It smells so fresh and clean, and a little goes a long way. I love to pop it in the diffuser to make my whole house smell amazing.
Another favorite use is to remove sticky things. (This is why it is so good in the stain remover too.) With four kids, I constantly have sticky messes to clean up. Whether it’s food all over the place from messy eaters and sticky fingers, or stickers being placed where they’re not supposed to be…Lemon essential oil is your best friend in this situation! Just put a few drops and let it sit for about a minute, and it will come right off.
Finally, I use Lemon in every cleaning DIY for around the house. The fresh, clean smell plus its amazing abilities to remove grease and sticky residue make it my favorite essential oil to add.
The best and most cost-effective way to get started with essential oils is to grab a starter bundle. This gives you a variety of essential oils to try (including Lemon), along with a beautiful diffuser. All at a reduced cost because you bought it as a bundle.
DIY Laundry Stain Remover Ingredients:
- 30 ml glass roller bottle
- 15 ml Thieves laundry soap
- 15 ml Thieves household cleaner
- 10 drops Lemon essential oil
DIY Laundry Stain Remover Instructions:
- In an empty glass roller bottle, pour Thieves laundry soap to the halfway mark. You can measure exactly 15 ml out, or eyeball it.
- Then, fill the rest of the way with Thieves household cleaner, leaving a little bit of room at the top for the Lemon essential oil and to allow room to shake it up.
- Add 10 drops of Lemon essential oil to top it off.
- Pop the roller cap back on the top and give it a shake.
- Roll directly on stains before washing.
How to Use & Store:
The most effective way I’ve found to use this DIY laundry stain remover is to first rinse the stained garment in cold water. After this is done, then take your stain remover bottle and roll it on the stain. Let it sit on the stain for a little bit before throwing it in the washer. I’ve even left it overnight before.
Store it at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.
