Follow these easy steps for the best bug bite relief. A simple fix to get rid of that constant, annoying itch and swelling.

If you spend any amount of time outside in the summer, it’s inevitable that you will get bug bites. Even if you have a bottle of insect repellent handy, sometimes you forget to put it on because the kids are all whining, you are rushing out the door, or you are optimistic that the bugs will leave you alone that day.

Some people get bit more than others…I am one of those people. I also have a son who shares my blood type and the mosquitos love him as well. It’s a thing. Some bugs have a taste preference for specific blood types.

There is a better way than suffering through the itchiness or watching as your kids scratch and turn them into open wounds. Essential oils are a fantastic, natural product to use to support so many things. By keeping just a few, key essential oils stocked in your home, you can combat many issues. Some essential oils help protect the skin and allow it to heal faster, while others help with the redness, swelling, and itching.

How to Find Relief from the Bug Bites

Finding relief is as easy as grabbing a couple bottles of essential oil and whipping up a simple roller to apply. The roller bottle makes for super easy application and is small enough to fit in your pocket for quick access. As soon as you see that itchy and red, swollen skin, roll the essential oils right on and get a head start on the soothing and healing.

While you can just grab an essential oil bottle and apply it directly, skin sensitivity is a factor to keep in mind. Some individuals can apply peppermint essential oil on their skin without experiencing any irritation, but most will need to dilute it before applying, especially children and pregnant women. This is one reason I love using roller bottles so much.

Roller bottles simplify the process by having your essential oils already diluted with a carrier oil. Another benefit to using a carrier oil is that when you use fractionated coconut oil as your carrier oil, it has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. This makes it a great choice for bug bites and skin irritations. It can help reduce the itching, heal the skin and prevent any infection.

Another bonus to using roller bottles is you can be prepared ahead of time by making up popular roller bottle recipes that you know you will put to good use. I keep our most used roller bottles on the counter next to the vitamins for easy access. Roller bottles also make it easy for kids to grab and apply themselves. I like to put cute stickers or labels on them to help them remember what to use, especially if they cannot read on their own yet.

How to Make a Bug Bite Relief Roller Bottle

So now that you have read why roller bottles are amazing, let me show you how easy it is to make one.

First, grab your empty roller bottle and stand it up on a flat surface. Next, grab your essential oils. There are quite a few that are helpful for soothing and relieving itchiness. You don’t need to use every single essential oil out there that is good for bug bite relief. I chose to use just three for this recipe.

Add 10 drops of each essential oil into the roller bottle. Then, take your fractionated coconut oil and fill the roller up to the top of the widest part. To avoid making a mess, I always make sure to buy my carrier oils with a pump on top. That way I can just pump the carrier oil directly into the roller bottle. Quick and simple.

Finally, pop the roller top on the top of the bottle, shake it up and roll it on any bug bite for itch relief. When not using, put the twist cap on to keep the roller covered.

Note: I typically do about 30 drops in a roller bottle for adults. For kids, I cut this amount in half to 15 drops. For age 2 and under, dilute the essential oils even more and do about 6-8 drops total.

How to Store

Essential oils are best stored at room temperature and not in direct sunlight. It is also a good idea NOT to store them away in a drawer where you never see them. Out of sight = out of mind. Make sure you are actually using your essential oils by keeping them out where you can see them. A cute shelf on the wall or on a counter or dresser top is the perfect location.

Bug Bite Relief Ingredients:

  • 10 ml roller bottle
  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Purification essential oil
  • Fractionated coconut oil (or alternative carrier oil)

Bug Bite Relief Instructions:

  1. In a 10 ml roller bottle, add 10 drops each of Peppermint, Lavender and Purification essential oil.
  2. Now fill your roller bottle to the top of the widest part with your fractionated coconut oil (or alternative carrier oil)
  3. Finally, pop the roller top on, shake it up and you are ready to roll.

After you make your bug bite relief roller bottle, you need a label so you remember what it’s for! Put your email in the box below and I will send one your way.

Other Natural Ways to Get Bug Bite Relief

  1. Apple cider vinegar helps to balance the pH level of your skin and can help soothe and relieve the itchiness.
  2. Honey is a natural anti-inflammatory. Apply to swollen bug bites only after you are done outside, otherwise you might attract more bugs with the sweet smell.
  3. Witch hazel can help to dry up a bug bite and reduce itching. You can apply straight on or make up a spray bottle with witch hazel and the same essential oils in this recipe.
