Follow these steps to learn a simple DIY foaming hand soap recipe. An easy swap to get rid of toxic chemicals and support your immune system.
This foaming hand soap is one of my all-time favorite DIYs to make. It is so simple that even my eight- and six-year-old kids can make it on their own.
Castile soap is the first ingredient you need for this DIY foaming hand soap. It is good to keep a large bottle around because you can use it for other DIYs. Plus, keeping it in stock at all times makes it that much quicker to refill things right away. Essential oils are needed to create your desired fragrance. The cool thing about essential oils is that they are extremely versatile. You can use them to make this hand soap, but also for diffusing and other DIYs. They are a great natural method to get rid of toxic chemicals in your house. And we also use them often for natural wellness and support for when anyone is sick.
Why You Should Make Your Own
The first reason I love making my own foaming hand soap is because it is a great way to get rid of a lot of toxic chemicals out of your home. All of the artificial and synthetic ingredients that companies use to add fragrance to their products can be very toxic. They are not required to disclose the exact ingredients that they use to create their specific fragrances since it is a trade secret their company owns. Therefore, you really have no idea what kinds of toxic chemicals were used. By making your own foaming hand soap and using pure essential oils to customize the fragrance, you know exactly what ingredients you use to make the soap and add the fragrance.
That brings me to the second reason I prefer to make my own. The number of ingredients required to make your own foaming hand soap is so small! You literally need castile soap, essential oils and water. That’s it! I can easily refill a bottle when it is empty, or hand it off to one of my kids to do if I am in the middle of something else.
Finally, making your own DIY foaming hand soap is extremely cost effective! It costs me less than $1.00 to refill, which is WAY LESS than if I bought a “clean” hand soap from the store.
How to Make DIY Foaming Hand Soap
The first thing you need is a foaming hand soap pump. You can either purchase a glass one specifically made for foaming hand soap, or you can grab some mason jars and a foaming hand soap attachment. There are so many cute options for foaming hand soap bottles that you shouldn’t have any problem finding ones that fit your style.
Measure 4 tablespoons of unscented castile soap into your glass bottle. I always recommend going with unscented castile soap so you stay away from any added fragrances (remember we talked about artificial fragrances and how companies use who knows what ingredients!?).
Now, grab the essential oils that you want to use to add a custom fragrance to your DIY foaming hand soap. I found that using about 20 drops total makes the scent strong enough to smell when you wash your hands, but not too strong. You can stick with the same fragrance every single time or change it up. It is so fun to change the fragrance with the seasons, and the scent combinations are endless! Even if you only have a handful of essential oils, you can make a good number of different scents.

The final step is to fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. Didn’t I say this was a super simple DIY!? Make sure to leave a little bit of room at the top so it doesn’t overflow when you put the top on. Screw on the pump top and give it a gentle shake. Now you are all set to use it! Enjoy your fresh, clean hands without all of the nasty chemicals.
